Roads and transport in Pattaya: why it is convenient to live here

Pattaya Navigator · updated 2026-10-14

One of Pattaya's main advantages for year-round living is its developed road system. Here is how it works and what will improve in the coming years.

The road to Bangkok

It is about 150 kilometres from Pattaya to Bangkok by motorway (Motorway 7): around 1.5-2 hours by car. At peak times, on Friday evenings and Monday mornings, the trip can take longer. By comparison, Phuket is about 800 kilometres from Bangkok, and people usually fly there. More: Pattaya or Phuket.

Roads within Pattaya

  • Sukhumvit Road - the main wide thoroughfare along the city, which districts and housing estates connect to.
  • Highway 36 - the route out to Rayong and the Eastern Economic Corridor.
  • City streets: Beach Road along the waterfront, and Second and Third Roads parallel to it. With several parallel axes, you can bypass a jam.
  • The eastern districts (Nong Prue, Huay Yai, Pong) are linked to the coast by wide multi-lane roads; driving is easier here than in the centre.

The heaviest load falls on the centre in high season and on weekend evenings. At other times traffic flows more freely than in Bangkok.

What is being built and planned

  • Monorail with three lines: hearings run until November 2026. Read more.
  • U-Tapao Airport: under construction since 3 April 2026. Read more.
  • Street modernisation: cables are going underground and new drainage pipes are being laid: Pattaya modernisation.

What to consider when choosing housing

  1. Count travel time to school and work at rush hour, not kilometres.
  2. Near Sukhumvit and Highway 36 you reach the main roads faster.
  3. For living by the sea without a car, the centre, Pratumnak and Jomtien suit best, where everything is close.
